the book mark | my favorite guilty pleasures

Hello Book Lovers. It’s time for my last book post for 2017. So far we’ve covered summer reading, brain books, my favorite whodunnits, and the best food books. Phew. There is something about December that always makes me want to return to old favorites. The type of comfort books that you read when you just want to read something refreshing. I am of course talking about my favorite guilty pleasures. These are NOT the books for intellectual stimulation. It’s basically the HGTV of my book lists. Let me know what your favorite guilty pleasure books are in the comments!

1. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
This satirical saga of three super-rich Asian families is the epitome of a guilty pleasure. Kwan takes you into the world of the absurdly over-the-top mega rich Asians who have boundless time and money to meddle in each other’s affairs. This is a page-turning, campy, high-speed romp in a Mean Girls meets Clueless type of way.
Pair with: Something Expensive and Bubbly

2. Cat Amongst the Pigeons by Agatha Christie

This thrilling classic from the grand dame of mystery- Dame Agatha Christie- is one of my absolute favorite mystery novels. Set in a fictional English all girl’s boarding school, Cat features (though briefly) detective Hercule Poirot, Christie’s most famous creation and the only fictional character to have gotten an obituary in The New York Times. There is crime, there is espionage, there is an international conspiracy…basically everything that makes a mystery wonderful.

Pair with: Chocolate Milk (with a shot of bailey’s if necessary)

3. Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling is many things- an actress, a comedian, and my imaginary celeb BFF. In Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me?, Mindy invites you on a tour of her life and provides her very unscientific observations on romance, friendship and Hollywood. Such gems include- “what Mindy thinks make a great best friend ( someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night) or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in the room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous that you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law).” Reading Is Everyone Hanging Out with Me? Is like sitting in a room with your best friend, binge-watching Criminal Minds and finding out that celebs can be as weird as you are.

Pair with: Cupcakes.

4. Right Ho, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse

“Follow the adventures of Bertie Wooster and his gentleman’s gentleman, Jeeves in this PG Wodehouse classic. In this book, Bertie must deal with the Market Snodsbury Grammar School prize giving, the broken engagement of his cousin Angela, the wooing of Madeline Bassett by Gussie Fink-Nottle, and the resignation of Anatole, the genius chef. Will he prevail? Only with the aid of Jeeves! ”

Pair With: A Proper Afternoon tea. Do not forget the closest cream.

5. Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less by Jeffrey Archer
“What do an Oxford Don, a revered society physician, a chic French art dealer, and a charming English lord have in common? Overnight, each novice investor lost their life savings to one man- Harvey Metcalfe. With nothing left to lose, each of these four strangers embark on a master plan to con the conman and get their money back- not a penny more and not a penny less. Follow them as they travel from the luxurious casinos of Monte Carlo to fashionable London gallery to the quant Oxford campus to get their revenge.”
Pair With: A Dry Martini
6. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
“Harry Potter’s life is miserable. Orphaned at a young age, he lives with his heartless relatives who force him to live in a closet under the stairs.  But his fortune changes when a letter arrives telling him the truth- he’s a wizard. Join Harry as he travels to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.”
Pair with: Ginger Beer…because I’ve tried Butter beer and honestly, not a fan. (Potterheads, please don’t come after me for this)

[…] I’m sadly relating to this Vogue article on not being able to read during the pandemic. I keep starting and stopping all the new books coming through my e-reader. Instead of trying to go through new books, I’m trying to go through some of my past favorite reads. I thought I’d share some of my past favs – the brain testers, the who dunnits, and of course, my favorite guilty pleasure books.  […]
